It's just smart marketing to release when you won't have to fight a zillion other big names for attention.
Imagine what would happen if, say, Boyzone, Robbie Williams, Westlife, SpiceGirls, and The Corrs all released their albums at the same time. There is just too much competition for the same audience. All of them would sell fewer cd's because alot of fans like more than one of the acts but can't afford to get all the cd's they want, at least not right away.
So why not hold off a few weeks until the fervor dies down a little and you can grab your audience's attention a little easier? You still have to put out a decent CD to get people to keep buying it but first you have to get a decent number to buy it at all.
