Many of the boybands seem to spend a lot of time posing as something they are not or trying too hard to impress that they instead come off looking very foolish and these are the ones that soon fade and become the punchlines for endless jokes.. New Kids on The Block, anyone?

The current crop has several that I don't expect to be around for more than another year or so because it is becoming increasingly obvious that they don't have the depth to evolve into a long lasting act. I saw one on TV recently that shocked me with how thin their voices actually were, not to mention that fact that these otherwise okay-looking guys now look appallingly bad as they show how wrapped up they've become in their own hype.

There are a few individual performers that I think have genuine, non-fadish talent and are developing more lasting talents, like writing, arranging and producing. I think they will have a career long after their bands are history, but perhaps behind the scenes.

Basically, though, the boybands are mostly about fun and aren't too be taken too seriously. There is one boyband I am quite fond of and enjoy tremendously, but, I also realize it's unlikely they'll be as big five years from now if they are even still around. It's a fun, innocent, crush thing to be enjoyed for it's innocence, simplicity, and harmlessness. At least for a person my age.

Physically, though, most are not that atttractive, though they could be with a little effort. So many of them look like those suburban kids riding their skateboards in the park downtown, trying to impress everyone with their imagined 'street toughness' in $100 tennis shoes and $50 designer t-shirts. You know the ones you quickly turn from so they don't see you laughing at them?

Maybe that's the real problem with some of the boybands out now, their already dated lack of originality and style. But, it's not the just the boybands that have this problem right now. It's pervasive thoughout music, TV and movies in general.

Don't worry though, a whole new bandwagon will come around soon enough. And we'll all be saying, "How can those kids like something like that? It wasn't like that when we were that age."
