comments: Another Australian national treasure, swimmer Ian Thorpe is only 17 years old. Ian made his first impact on the swimming world, when at the age of 14 he was named to the Australian National team to swim at the Pan Pacifics in Fukuoka, Japan. At those games, he came in second only to his fellow teammate Grant Hackett. At the World Championships tryouts in 1997, he again made an impressive showing, coming in again, only second to teammate Hackett. Impressive showings at the Championships, and later at the Commonwealth Games earned Thorpe his nickname of "Thorpedo". At the Commonwealth Games in the 200m not only did he beat the current world champ, Michael Klim, but he also set a new world's record with a time of 1 minute 47.24 seconds. The amazed Thorpe was quoted as saying after the race: "I feel preety extraodinary at the moment, to swim against guys of this standard and to be successful. Wow." Ian also came in 2nd in the 100m and first in the 400m. Ian has continued his successes and is a power to be reckoned with. Ian was named Swimmer of the Year, Male Swimmer of the Pan Pacs, and Australian Sportsperson of the Year. And he's quite the babe, now isn't he?
